Debbie has Miles to Go for Leukemia and Lymphoma - 2004

My goal is to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society prior to the June 6, 2004 Team in Training 100 mile bike race in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. This ride is in honor of my husband Edward Godfrey, who passed away from non-Hodgkins lymphoma on June 2, 1999.

In January I saw the Team in Training brochure at my health club and picked it up due to my personal connection to lymphoma. When I saw that there was an opportunity to help the LLS by biking 100 miles, there was no doubt in my mind that I would be biking at Tahoe.

The night I met my future husband, I told him that one of my goals was to ride a century. Life, work, running, school and then cancer got in the way of that goal. Whammmmmm. Powwwww. Zoweeee. Oh, yeah, I remember that goal. And what better way to resurrect it than in honor of Ed and in pursuit of a much bigger goal - finding cures and better treatments for lymphoma and leukemia.

So here I am at age 54, 10 pounds (ok 15) overweight and I haven't done a bike ride over 20 miles in, oh, 15 years. That and I've moved back to Maryland where I am afraid of the traffic. But no matter how tough or scary the training may get, it will pale in comparison to Ed's battle against lymphoma.

I've begun my journey to Lake Tahoe. Some letters have been written. Some fundraising ideas have been brainstormed. Some muscles have already been tested. But I have Miles to Go Before I Sleep (with apologies to Robert Frost)!
